Reverse osmosis (RO) is a highly effective water purification process that removes dissolved salts, chemicals, and biological contaminants using a semi-permeable membrane.
How RO Works
Reverse osmosis works by applying pressure to water, forcing it through a semipermeable membrane that allows only water molecules to pass while blocking larger molecules, dissolved salts, and impurities. Unlike ordinary osmosis, where water naturally moves from low to high solute concentration, RO applies pressure greater than the osmotic pressure, reversing the flow and producing purified water on one side and a concentrated waste stream on the other. Most RO systems include prefilters to remove sediments and chlorine, protecting the membrane and enhancing efficiency.
Contaminants Removed
RO is capable of removing a wide range of contaminants, including:
- Dissolved salts and metal ions
- Nitrates and sulfates
- Organic compounds, pesticides, and herbicides
- Bacteria, viruses, and endotoxins
- Sugars and other high molecular weight molecules
This makes RO suitable for producing potable water, industrial process water, and even desalinated seawater. 💦 Remove up to 99% of dissolved salts & impurities
💦 Protect your plumbing & appliances
💦 Improve water taste instantly
💦 Reduce bottled water costs
Applications
RO water treatment is used in various settings:
- Residential: Purifying tap water for drinking and cooking
- Commercial: Food and beverage production, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics
- Industrial: Boiler feedwater, chemical manufacturing, and electronics
- Desalination: Converting seawater into freshwater in arid regions
Advantages
- Produces high-purity water with minimal dissolved solids
- Reduces chemical and microbial contaminants effectively
- Can be scaled for home, commercial, or industrial use
- Supports sustainable water management in areas with limited freshwater
Considerations
Energy consumption varies depending on water source and system size overall, reverse osmosis is a proven, versatile, and efficient water treatment technology that ensures safe, clean water for a wide range of applications. Membranes require periodic cleaning and replacement Pre-treatment may be necessary to prevent fouling or scaling
